The revolt of the Roosevelt delegates to the cohventiom was open from the momemt the permanent roll containing the names of the contested delegates was approved. Henry J, Allen of Kansas read the '‘‘valedictory” statement in behalf of Roosevelt, asking .that lids name be not presented and that his delegates sit in mute protest against all further proceed ings. A great majority of the Roosevelt delegates from Illinois and all i« the Idaho delegation declined to follow the advice of Roosevelt. The split in the convention was the occasion of no surprise. It was but the fulfillment of the predictions made during the jpast few days. The closing scenes of the convention were marked by counter demonstrations for Taft and Roosevelt. The first test vote after the “valedictory1’ came on the adqption of tlie party aphitfrom. The affirmative vote was 666 •while tire Roosevelt delegates present and not voting num bered three hundred and forty-three. Ua FoMette was placed before the convention, but Roosc **d!ts wishes were carried out by his follower# and they were silent-during the call on the states for nominations. The convention re-nominated James Shliooicraft Sherman for Vice-President. When it became absolutely certain to day that Taft would be nominated without difficulty tire lead ers in control of the convention decided to give him as run ning mate his companion 011 the ticket in 1908 All others dropped from the race, and Sherman was the only candidate placed before the convention / As the convention adjourned the nearly 3^0 Roosevelt delegates declining to \ote hastened a way to tender tc Roose velt tmfiv.imnation of Tmfnew party. The followers of Roose velt gathered in Orchestra Hall and pie Iged their sup port to the former President. Roosevelt in accepting the nomination tonight, said that he did so with the understand ing that he would willingly step aside if it should be the desire of the new party, when organized, to select another standard bearer. The police had difficulty in handling the throng that went to the hall. Gove nor John son of California presided. -V They are Passing Mr. Editor;— I noliced in your last issue the death of my old friend Columbus Adams. Well do I remember in my campaigns of years ago, the smiling face of iny old republican friend “Lum” Adams, as we all call ed him, and the encourage ment he always gave us with his presence and good natural smile. No better Republican walked the earth. The old guards are passing away, one •by one, aud it will not be many more years when we all will be gathered to our Father When I think of old Fall Creek my mind turns to such men as Rad Williams, Ellis Williams, Bob Mathis, Lum Adams, Guss Williams, and many other old • republican friends, I am always glad to take them by the hand when we meet tho’ I seldom meet them these days unless I hap pen to be in Yadkiuville on some public occasion and often they are not there. Many have passed over the River, and are at rest, the others have given way to the younger guards. May the Jatterdays of these old men be full of sunshine and when they cross the Rivei may it be to the shades of eternal rest. God bless them all, J. A. Lillingtou June 18, 1912, Rev.
